University community surveyed on sustainability
In 2022, students and employees were surveyed on the topic of sustainability at the ZHAW. The results show the perceptions, needs and wishes of the university community with regard to sustainable development at the ZHAW. This helps the strategic program ZHAW sustainable.
The ZHAW's sustainability strategy is broadly supported by the survey participants, and the goals formulated in it are considered relevant. However, in terms of achieving the intended objectives and embedding a culture of sustainable development, the ZHAW scores rather lukewarm - that is, neither good nor bad - according to the respondents. However, the respondents see considerable potential in the overarching implementation of the strategy. Sustainability-relevant structures, instruments and initiatives, as well as the connection between the ZHAW sustainable strategic program and sustainability efforts, are still too little known among university members.
According to the survey results, teaching and research on sustainable development at ZHAW show a strong focus on environmental sustainability. However, there is also a perception that sustainable development still receives too little attention in many courses. This is related to the assumption that people with a fundamental interest in sustainable development were probably more likely to participate in the survey than others. A similar picture emerges with regard to the topic of research: even though the ZHAW's research contributions on the topic are considered very relevant with great potential for application in business and society, researchers at the ZHAW would like to see a structural expansion for research projects with a sustainability connection.
The results make it clear that steps must continue to be taken to ensure that sustainable development as a topic receives more attention from all ZHAW members and that existing commitment is promoted and expanded: In order for the sustainability strategy to be implemented, the engagement of many hearts and minds is needed. It is therefore all the more encouraging that around three quarters of the survey participants indicated that they would like to become more involved in sustainability at the ZHAW.
