Visualization of modelled Spatial Development Scenarios within the WSL Research Program "Spatial Requirements of Man and Nature" (Federal Research Center for Forest, Snow and Landscape WSL) (WSL)

Scenario Visualization in Spatial Planning II

Description

Scenarios of future periurban landscape development were modelled within the WSL research program "Spatial Requirements of Man and Nature" (Price et al., 2015). The spatial representation of the scenarios corresponds to the field-based conceptual data model, storing single values in continuous raster data structures. However, this data model hardly allows realistic scenario visualization because it lacks individual objects such as buildings or trees. This applied research project provided a straight forward approach to create discrete objects from fields to enable realistic visualization and to unlock the potential of raster-based scenarios. The conceptual data model used to represent discrete phenomena with distinct locations and boundaries is known as entity-based. The field-to-entity conversion is based on fusing the field-based scenarios with entity-based landscape data making use of semantics-based spatial heuristics. Default GIS processing capabilities are used and stringed to a sequence of dynamic models.
