Smart Dust – Exploring Technology Affordances in the Industrial Economic Sector
Description
Smart dust is an autonomous sensing, computing, and communication system that can be packed into a cubic-millimeter mote to form integrated, massively distributed sensor networks. Research has spent tremendous efforts to miniaturize the technology, however little knowledge is available on the opportunities of smart dust in our daily lives. Particularly, the industrial economic sector holds the potential to afford vast action potentials of this digital technology, resulting in the following research question: “What are technology affordances of smart dust in the industrial economic sector?” To address this question, this project leverages an explorative qualitative research strategy on the foundation of the theory of the affordances. Expected results comprise novel affordances and additional insights on the role of this emerging technology, which contributes to research, practice, and society.
