Techno-Economic Grid Connection Optimization for Electric Freight Fleets
Description
To enable the electrification of freight fleets, more needs to be done than just waiting for grid reinforcement. Stakeholders can collaboratively develop off- and on-grid solutions with bidirectional charging from second-use and in-vehicle batteries, PV, smart charging management, etc. The project takes DPD on its Wolf site (Basel SBB rail hub) as an unit of analysis to investigate needs and develop possibilities to charge a fully electrified DPD fleet based on the requirements of operations time and delivery route length. A techno-economic simulation model is developed to analyze the possible measures and derive energy demand requirements on a daily cycle. Furthermore, a TCO and LCC model is developed to economically calculate possible measures and make informed decisions about which measures are worth to pursue from an organization’s perspective. The results will be generalized and disseminated for additional adoptions, supporting the Swiss government in achieving the set net zero goals.
