Esther Gamper wins ENPHE Master’s thesis award
At this year’s European Network of Physiotherapy in Higher Education conference in Reykjavik, Esther Gamper, a graduate of the ZHAW’s MSc in Physiotherapy, won first prize for her thesis “Outdoor walking training in severe COPD, a feasibility randomized controlled trial”.
For patients with severe chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), walking is one of the most important everyday activities. In her study, Esther Gamper examined interval outdoor walking training in comparison with conventional bicycle ergometer training. The treatment took place across 3 weeks and a follow-up took place after 3 months. The patients of the walking group were very pleased with the training and their quality of life was significantly improved after three weeks. The feasibility of the study design was confirmed.
The results of the study indicate new possibilities for the rehabilitation of patients with COPD.
Esther Gamper was awarded 1st prize. Besides the prize money, she received an invitation to the 2018 conference in Paris, where she will act as a jury member and hand the prize to the next winner.
