Development of a training manual for physical training and an accompanying handout for independent training at home for older persons with mild cognitive impairment

Description

The benefits of physical activity and exercise for health are undisputed and are recommended for the general population, adapted to their needs concerning age or pre-existing conditions. Unfortunately, no training manual has been developed specifically for this group of people and their needs for people with mild cognitive impairment. This project aims to develop a manual for physical training under the guidance of physiotherapists in the clinic and a handout for individual training at home based on international guidelines for physical activity for older people with mild cognitive impairment and older people in general. Experienced physiotherapists will work out, discuss and define the manual in workshops. The physical exercise will include the aspects of endurance, strength, balance, coordination and mobility; one specific chapter of the manual is dedicated to each training aspect. Different training options will be described, including possibilities for adaptation, the targeted intensity and how this is determined. Based on the manual, a selection of exercises to be included in the handout will be determined. Subsequently, the individual exercises will be described clearly and simply in colloquial language and illustrated for better comprehension. Finally, the manual and the handout will be piloted in different clinics. The practicability and comprehensibility will be assessed with the help of a structured questionnaire. After any adjustments, the manual and the handout will finally be finalised and made available. The training manual and handout can be used directly in physiotherapy and home programmes. In addition, dissemination of the manual and handout via use by professional associations, e.g. physio st.gallen-appenzell, is being sought.
