Strategies for a Secure Operation of Net Zero Power Systems

Description

Switzerland is under an ongoing energy transition exemplified by the enforcement of its Swiss Energy Strategy 2050, the long term climate policy and the 2050 net‐zero target, which are policies tailored to reach a net‐zero power grid by 2050. Although similar trends are followed worldwide, emerging nations such as Nepal, have more cost‐effective plans but still are working in contributing a more sustainable future. Nepal, for instance is expected to increase their installed capacity ten times more within the next ten years. Therefore, regardless of the economy power, to meet the stablished policy goals, electric grids worldwide are undergoing fundamental topology changes, related to large utilization of converter‐interface technology such as solar panels, wind turbines, battery energy storage systems and electromobility. As a result, a smart grid highly dependent on digital resources, where the interdependency in the communication network might lead to a more vulnerable grid that could potentially lead to a system collapse (blackout). These concerns call for innovative ideas, and in this project, we focus in proposing innovative solutions for the operators of the electrical grid.
