Industrial insect rearing as a decentralized, circular economy food waste recovery strategy (SmartBreed)
Development of various experimental setups for the optimization and further development of a circular economy insect breeding system for upcycling food waste.
Description
This project is developing an innovative system for decentralized insect farming based on the circular economy. Food waste from food-producing companies is converted into valuable products through the use of insect larvae. These products include insect excrement as fertilizer, protein-rich insect meal as animal feed and insect oil for the production of biodiesel. The system promotes an industrial symbiosis in which the holistic influences and challenges are investigated and further developed.
The research covers all aspects of this circular process, from market entry strategies such as labels and distribution partners to the optimization of the production process and bio-reactors
