Work Situation and Job Satisfaction of Midwives in Swiss Obstetric Institutions
Focus on Midwives: Under what conditions do midwives work in obstetric institutions in Switzerland and how satisfied are they with their work situation? This question is being explored in a dissertation project linked to the SOCRATES study.
Description
Background
It is currently unknown whether Switzerland has a sufficient number of midwives to ensure adequate care for families during childbirth. In many parts of the world, a shortage of midwives poses a significant challenge, potentially affecting the quality of care provided. Similarly, in Switzerland, many midwives leave the profession prematurely. However, when midwives are satisfied with their work situation—an outcome influenced by various factors—they are more likely to remain in the profession for longer.
Objectives
This study aims to investigate and elucidate the current work and staff situation of midwives in obstetric institutions across Switzerland, as well as their job satisfaction and well-being at work. The study further seeks to identify factors influencing job satisfaction within the midwifery profession and to translate these findings into actionable recommendations.
Methodology
This dissertation project is embedded within the SOCRATES study, funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF). It encompasses two cross-sectional observational studies, each involving a survey-based data collection. The work and staff situation of midwives will be assessed nationwide through surveys conducted with obstetric institutions as part of the SOCRATES study. The data will be descriptively analysed, examined, and visually represented.
In the second subproject, job satisfaction and well-being will be assessed through surveys of employed midwives across all linguistic regions of Switzerland. These findings will then be described and analysed in relation to their work situation. The linkage of data will be enabled by recording the institutions in both surveys.
Relevance
Understanding the current staff and work situation, as well as the job satisfaction and well-being of midwives in obstetric institutions, is essential for ensuring adequate midwifery care in Switzerland. The recommendations derived from this project will support obstetric institutions in improving conditions to enhance job satisfaction among midwives, thereby addressing staff shortages and ultimately improving the quality of care provided.
