Multilingualism makes a difference. On early language education’s multiple impacts on the construction of inequality in childhood

Multilingualism is of great importance in Switzerland's self-image. The project examines the role that multilingualism and different languages play for children in daycare centers.

Description

Great expectations are placed on the early language development of children: children from migrant families in particular should learn a national language with the aim of integration and equal opportunities. Daycare centers therefore play a major role in preparing foreign-language children for kindergarten and school. Multilingual daycare centers, on the other hand, which offer at least one other language (e.g. English, Spanish) in addition to a national language, are aimed more at internationally oriented and educationally ambitious parents who want their children to grow up multilingual from an early age. Building on these differences, the project sheds light on different ways of dealing with early multilingualism and diversity and shows what effects this has on the children and their families. All those involved have their say: the daycare centers and their employees, the parents - and the children themselves.

Scientifically, it can be assumed that children with different languages of origin also have different experiences when it comes to the recognition of their language use and multilingualism, and that this does not remain without consequences for their school career, later educational and life opportunities and social inequality. The associated issues are relevant in terms of social, educational and integration policy.
