Space sufficiency in office buildings (FBB)
Development of a simulation tool that can forecast office space requirements and identify potential for space sufficiency.
Description
The current mobile-flexible and hybrid ways of working require less and different office space than traditional offices. The utilisation of office workstations after the Covid19 pandemic is around 20-40% and therefore holds considerable potential for space sufficiency. Nevertheless, organisations are reluctant to reduce their office space because they are unsure how much space they might need in the future and the ecological savings potential is not transparent. A simulation is therefore to be developed which, based on information on employee mobility and their activities in the office, allows forecasts of future office space requirements.
To develop and validate the simulation, empirical data on mobility and activity profiles as well as the associated space requirement planning and actual utilisation after implementation are used. The simulation thus removes an obstacle to the implementation of space sufficiency in office buildings.
