Unpacking the Internal Dynamics of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Implementation
In the current session of the International Business Seminar Series, we are exploring an exciting connection together with Prof. David Risi: the influence of CSR managers and resources on the implementation of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), particularly in Swiss financial institutions.
The research presented by Prof. David Risi as part of the International Business Seminar Series examines how Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) managers and resources together influence CSR implementation, focusing on Swiss financial institutions. CSR involves integrating social, environmental, and ethical concerns into business operations. This process requires significant managerial effort and resource investment.
Both CSR managers and resources are recognized as critical for success. However, their combined effects remain unclear. Some studies suggest they enhance implementation, while others indicate they may create challenges.
To address this, the study uses a qualitative, longitudinal case study approach. It focuses on large Swiss banks and insurance companies, which have invested in CSR initiatives, allocated resources, and appointed CSR managers. Data includes approximately 130 interviews and the analysis of 10,000 pages of internal and public documents.
The aim is to develop a theoretical framework that explains how CSR managers and resources jointly shape CSR implementation. The findings are expected to advance CSR research and provide practical insights for improving CSR practices in Swiss companies.
David Risi is a Professor of Responsible Management at the Bern University of Applied Sciences (Business) and a Habilitated Lecturer (Privatdozent) at the University of St. Gallen. He received his doctorate and habilitation from the University of St. Gallen and won the 2017 Academy of Management Social Issues in Management Best Dissertation Award. David's work has appeared in numerous practice-oriented outlets (e.g., Harvard Business Review) and leading academic journals (e.g., Journal of Management Studies). He held a senior researcher position at the University of Oxford and leads major research projects (i.a., supported by the Swiss National Science Foundation). He teaches at leading universities in Switzerland and abroad, works closely with industry partners, speaks on practice panels, and takes on consultancy mandates.
