Empire building has always come at an economic cost for Russia

In a recent "The Conversation" article, IMI director Christopher Hartwell joins Paul Vaaler to address the economic consequences of the war in the Ukaine for Putin's Russia.

"With its newest defense budget going 'all in' on its already faltering invasion of Ukraine, Russia appears to have learned none of the lessons of its past. Then as now, Ukraine and Ukrainian defiance constituted a grave threat to Russian territorial ambitions."

In this article published on "The Conversation", Christopher Hartwell and Paul Vaaler use concrete figures to illustrate the economic impact of Russia's war of aggression in Ukraine and show the historical continuity of the challenge of shaping and maintaining a Russian empire as well as integrating recalcitrant territories like Ukraine.
