New Employee at the Center for Arts Management: Dr. Małgorzata Ćwikła

Dr. Małgorzata Ćwikła joins the ZKM team as a researcher in the ‘Culture goes sustainable’ project from 1st October 2024.

After completing her Master’s degree in Polish Philology at the University of Wrocław, where she already collaborated with various theaters, primarily the Jerzy Grotowski Institute, Dr. Małgorzata Ćwikła began her career as a producer and curator in the cultural scene. This included, among others, the Hebbel am Ufer Theater in Berlin, where she worked on performative projects such as "Re-Education," the Polski Express Theater Festival, and "X-Wohnungen," as well as the Dramatic Theater in Warsaw, where she was involved in the development and implementation of the theater's marketing strategies.

From 2008 to 2009, she was a scholarship holder of the Robert Bosch Stiftung in the program “Cultural Managers from Central and Eastern Europe,” which gave her the opportunity to work as a guest dramaturg at the Kampnagel International Cultural Factory in Hamburg. In 2010, she completed an internship at the Polish Embassy in Sarajevo, where she organized a concert at the Sarajevo Philharmonic as part of the Chopin Year.

In 2014, she earned her PhD in Management Studies from Jagiellonian University in Kraków with a dissertation on the management of theater co-productions. During her doctoral studies, she collaborated with cultural institutions in Kraków. After completing her dissertation, she worked at the Institute of Culture of Jagiellonian University, initially as a research assistant and later as a junior professor of cultural management. She also gained teaching experience in Germany, Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Sweden, and Iceland. Between 2018 and 2024, she was the editor-in-chief of the first scientific, peer-reviewed journal on cultural management in Poland, published by the Faculty of Management and Social Communication at Jagiellonian University in Kraków.

Her interest in the intersection of culture and sustainability led her to Freiburg im Breisgau, where she worked from 2021 to 2024 as an expert in sustainable development in the cultural sector at ICLEI Europe. At the same time, she was employed as a lecturer in sustainability sciences at University College Freiburg.

Her research interests lie in the areas of sustainability in the cultural sector, project management in culture, qualitative research methods, and management in times of climate crisis. She has published in scientific journals such as Organization, International Journal of Managing Projects in Business, Futures, and International Journal of Cultural Policy, and actively participated in conferences such as EGOS, IRSPM, SCOS, and ENCATC.

In the project "Culture Goes Sustainable," she is responsible for the development of sustainability labels for cultural institutions and the associated research.

We are pleased to welcome Małgorzata as a team member and wish her a great start at ZKM.
