SUPER-B: Supervised preoperative rehabilitation in patients scheduled for lumbar spinal surgery – A scoping review
Beschreibung
Prehabilitation before lumbar spine surgery may pose a valuable contribution to patients' perioperative pathways by improving physical capacity and reducing pain to withstand both, physical and mental stress caused by surgery. Reduced complication rates, faster recovery and sustainable patient-relevant improvements may be achieved. However, high-quality evidence is scarce, and it is not clear, what prehabilitation concepts work best.
Background:
The present study will undertake a scoping review of research on preoperative interventions before lumbar spine surgery to determine the extent of research on this topic. In addition, the presentation of subgroups, the type of surgical interventions and prehabilita-tion concepts, the outcome parameters analysed, and the methods used are explored.
Objectives:
This scoping review will consider publications including adult patients undergoing preoperative intervention before lumbar spine surgery.
Inclusion criteria:
The methodology will follow the JBI recommendations for scoping reviews and the PRISMA-ScR checklist. A comprehensive database search in MEDLINE/PubMed, EMBASE (Ovid), CINAHL (EBSCO), Cochrane Library, Physiotherapy Evidence Database, Web of Science and Scopus will be conducted. Prehab concepts will be identified, and the methodological quality of the included studies will be assessed, where findings will be mapped and summarised according to current reporting standards for scoping reviews. Scoping review question What concepts of prehabilitation in patients awaiting elective lumbar spine surgery have been reported? Second, literature on prehabilitation before lumbar surgery will be explored regarding patient selection, surgical interventions, types of preoperative interventions and outcome parameters.
