Dr. Jan Abrell (ETH Zurich)

Jan Abrell has worked since 2013 at the ETH Zurich first as a Post-doc and since 2015 as Senior researcher at the Center for Energy Policy and Economics (CEPE) of the Chair of Economics / Energy Economics. His research interests include environmental and energy economics applying numerical programming. Between 2005 and 2009 he worked as a research associate at the Dresden University of Technology for the Chair of Energy Economics where he also received his PhD.

Dr. Silvia Banfi (EWZ)

Silvia Banfi Frost has worked since 2011 at the electricity utility of the city of Zurich (ewz) as head of the research team. Her activity fields include the analysis of electricity market and of its regulatory framework. Between 2000 and 2011 she worked at the Centre for Energy Policy and Economics at ETH Zurich. She studied economics at the University of Zurich, where she also received her doctorate.

Dr. Andreas Bergmann (SML, ZHAW)

Andreas Bergmann is a Public Finance professor and Director of the Public Sector department at the ZHAW School of Management. He is an acknowledged expert in public sector accounting and for many years served as Chair of the International Public Sector Accounting Standards Board (IPSASB). In this function, he advised public financial management reforms in Central Asia, Latin America, South East Asia, and various international organizations.

Dr. Regina Betz

Regina Betz is Professor for Energy and Environment at the School of Management and Law of the Zurich University of Applied Sciences (ZHAW). She heads up the newly founded Center for Energy and the Environment (CEE) and is member of the Swiss Competence Centre for Research in Energy, Society and Transition (SCCER CREST). Before joining the ZHAW she was Joint Director of the Centre for Energy and Environmental Markets (CEEM) at the UNSW Sydney. Regina’s teaching and research interests are in the area of energy and climate policy as well as electricity market design applying experimental economics or empirical methods.

Dr. Thomas Geissmann (ETH Zurich)

Thomas Geissmann works as a post doc at the Center for Energy Policy and Economics at ETH Zurich. Among many other projects and publications, he published together with Prof. Massimo Filippini on the cost structure and cost efficiency of Swiss hydropower plants.

Dr. Peter Hettich (University of St.Gallen)

Peter Hettich is professor for public law. He is researching and teaching in the area of public economic law as well as construction, planning and environmental law. He serves as a director for the Institute of Public Financial Law, Fiscal Law and Law and Economics (IFF-HSG) and leads there the department of economic law. Peter Hettich is heading, in joint collaboration with other professors of the University of St.Gallen, the Centre for Energy Innovation, Governance and Investment (EGI-HSG), which forms part of the Swiss Competence Centre for Research in Energy, Society and Transition (SCCER CREST).

Dr. Bernd Kiefer (Management Consultant)

Bernd Kiefer is a Senior  Management Consultant for Power & Utilities. Before his retreat he was Partner of Fichtner Management Consulting AG Switzerland. He is an expert in strategy and business development in the energy sector. He received the Transdisciplinarity Award of the ETH Zurich and the Swiss National Foundation for the project «Ökostrom – The Social Construction of Green Electricity Standards».

Yingqi Liu (University of Oxford)

Yingqi Liu is a PhD candidate at the Environmental Change Institute at the University of Oxford. Supervised by Professor Nick Eyre and Dr Sarah Darby, he works on the topics of energy efficiency as a capacity resource, with a focus on the new Electricity Demand Reduction (EDR) Pilot in the UK and similar programs internationally, and the relationship of demand response and energy efficiency in forward capacity markets. His research also focuses on the design of energy efficiency programs.

Dr. Iain MacGill (CEEM, UNSW Sydney)

Iain MacGill is an Associate Professor in the School of Electrical Engineering and Telecommunications at the UNSW Sydney, and Joint Director (Engineering) for the University’s Centre for Energy and Environmental Markets (CEEM). He leads work in two of CEEM’s three research areas: Sustainable Energy Transformation including energy technology assessment and renewable energy integration, and Distributed energy systems including ‘smart grids’ and ‘smart’ homes, distributed generation and demand-side participation. He also has research interests in energy and climate policy.

Dr. Urs Meister (BKW)

Since October, 2015 Urs Meister is head of regulation and market analysis at BKW group, a Bern-based international energy and infrastructure company. He is also Member of the management board of the Association of Swiss Electricity Companies (VSE) and head of Energy at the Federal Office for National Economic Supply FONES. From 2007 until 2015 he was project manager at avenir suisse, a liberal think tank in Zurich, where he was, inter alia, responsible for the energy sector. He is also a lecturer at the University of Zurich, where he also received his doctorate in economics.

Dr. Stefan Muster (Vereinigung Schweizerischer Elektrizitätsunternehmen, VSE)

Stefan Muster is head of economics and regulation at the Association of Swiss Electricity Utilities. Before joining the VSE in 2012 he worked at the Directorate Construction of the Canton Zurich, where he was responsible for the energy section. Before 2007 he worked for the BKW group in the energy trading division as well as at the Federal Office for Energy. He holds a PhD from the University of Zurich with a specialisation in Operations Research and econometrics.

Dr. Reto Schleiniger (SML, ZHAW)

Reto Schleiniger is professor at the ZHAW School of Management and Law and a private lecturer at the University of Zurich. His research interests focus on environmental policy and thereby particularly on the cost-effective reduction of CO2-emissions as well as on public finance questions. 

Dr. Christoph Sutter (Axpo)

Christoph Sutter is a Member of the Management Board and Head New Energies at Axpo Power AG. He is responsible for the development, construction and operation of new power plants in the field of renewable energy. In addition, he is leading the M&A activities of Axpo Power AG.

Before joining Axpo, he was the CEO of South Pole Group, a company he co-founded in 2006 and that is globally active in the area of project development for climate protection projects. Prior to that he worked as a strategy consultant at McKinsey & Company in Zurich. He has done his PhD on the subject of sustainability assessment of energy projects at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich. Christoph Sutter was nominated as a Young Global Leader by the World Economic Forum and as Social Entrepreneur of the Year by the Schwab Foundation.

Dr. Hannes Weigt (University of Basel)

Hannes Weigt is associate professor for energy economics at the University of Basel.  His research topics, among others, include: Network Modeling, Congestion Management and Nodal Pricing in Electricity Networks, Investment and Incentives in Network Industries, Market Power and Competition Policy, Renewable Energy and Environmental Policies and Modeling of Water Resource Market

M. SC. Florian Zimmermann (Karlsruhe Institute of Technology)

Florian Zimmermann is a research assistant at the energy markets and energy systems analysis group at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology. His research topics include questions of electricity market designs. He currently works on a project that analyzes the impact of different market designs in the central west Europe market area on electricity prices and on the competitiveness of Swiss hydropower.
