Smart Waste

Function: Easy to install sensors in waste containers (containers, litter bins, etc.). The sensors transmit the level via wireless technology to a gateway and from there to a cloud. The person responsible for planning in the municipal companies obtains the data on the fill levels from the cloud and adjusts the route planning of the refuse collection to the fill levels.

Advantages: Avoidance of unnecessary garbage collection trips and thus savings in greenhouse gas emissions. Evaluations of the data enable waste container placement according to demand and forecasts for peak times.

Disadvantages: The sensors can indicate an incorrect level due to voluminous waste (e.g.: plastic bag jammed in the upper part of the waste container).

Example: Winterthur

Technology provider: EcoWaste, Elektron AG
