City of Winterthur
The city of Winterthur is located northeast of Zurich, has over 114,000 inhabitants (2018) and is thus the 6th largest city in Switzerland. Challenges facing the city include population growth, digitalization, infrastructure congestion, demographic change and increasing cost pressure. In Winterthur, projects have been underway for some time now that can be assigned to the Smart City theme. In 2016, the city council has decided to develop a Smart City strategy. An innovation team with representatives from all city departments has been appointed for this purpose. In 2018, the Smart City Winterthur strategy was then approved by the city council and is to be implemented:
- create and promote a common understanding of Smart City,
- define the strategic goals and thematic areas,
- regulate the organizational anchoring and implementation,
- define the necessary resources for the planning and implementation of Smart City,
- identify possible projects and measures.
In the same year, an annual innovation credit of CHF 200,000 was also discussed, which should guarantee the financing of smart city projects. In August 2019, the Smart City specialist position was filled.
