PhD programme in Biomedical Science and Health Innovations with ETH Zurich

The PhD programme in Biomedical Science and Health Innovations is a collaboration between the ZHAW School of Engineering and ETH Zurich, supported by swissuniversities. The aim of the PhD programme is to offer excellent Master's students (from universities of applied sciences and universities) the opportunity to carry out comprehensive research and study work and to lead them to a PhD.

PhD students are enrolled at ETH Zurich and are supervised by a professor at ETH Zurich and a co-supervisor at ZHAW. The duration of the doctorate is usually four years.

In the years 2025 to 2028, a coherent cohort of around 22 PhD students will be formed, who will collaborate on projects in the field of biomedical science and health innovation at both universities. The exchange between the doctoral students will be intensified through joint summer schools, seminars, courses and workshops.

Who can apply?

The programme is open to students with a Master's degree in the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM), Business Management and Economy, Health and Life Science from a university or university of applied sciences.

PhD students with a UAS Master's degree must attend additional modules at ETH Zurich during the PhD programme to earn 30 ECTS.

How do I apply?

The application takes place in two steps:

1. In the first step, the student must find a co-supervisor at the ZHAW. In addition, a research project must be defined and a supervisor at ETH Zurich must be identified.

2 After acceptance in the first step, the second step is the application and formal admission as a doctoral student at ETH Zurich as part of the PhD programme in Biomedical Science and Health Innovations with ETH Zurich. The application documents (see below) must be submitted to the scientific coordinator of the PhD programme, Prof. Dr. Silvio Lorenzetti (lort@zhaw.ch). He formally approves the documents and forwards them to the committee, consisting of representatives from the ZHAW and ETH Zurich, for assessment. The committee decides on the acceptance of the student and co-supervision.

The application documents include the following:
