The Swiss Competence Centers for Energy Research are a key component in the Federal Council’s Coordinated Energy Research in Switzerland Action Plan, designed to promote energy research over the coming years. In order to successfully master the transition of current energy systems towards sustainability, the energy research needs to be enforced. Therefore, seven Swiss Competence Centres for Energy Research (SCCER) will be installed and supported by the Swiss government in the coming years. The University of Basel takes the lead of the Swiss Competence Centre for Energy Research on economics, environment, law, and behaviour (SCCER 5). The ZHAW is the co-leading house and is herewith the only university of applied sciences with a leading position in the SCCERs. One other important research partner is the University of St. Gallen.

The inter-university connected SCCER 5 is the only competence centre that addresses societal questions of the energy turnaround. It starts its research activities in January 2014. The president of the ZHAW Jean-Marc Piveteau highlights the role of the ZHAW for the knowledge transfer from academia to the society as well as between the seven competence centres.

ZHAW-competence map of energy research
At the ZHAW many researchers from distinct disciplines in over 30 institutes are collaborating in support of a successful energy turnaround. They contribute with their knowledge not only to the SCCER 5 but also to other Competence Centres for Energy Research. With regard to the manifold contributions, the ZHAW has elaborated a competence map of energy research(PDF 548,9 KB) that provides an overview of the expertise affiliated at the ZHAW. It presents all the energy research domains where the ZHAW can support entrepreneurs and public authorities with their know-how.
