Data Analysis and Statistics
The focus of the group is all about the transformation of data into usable knowledge - a central challenge of today's information age. A professionally executed data analysis with constructive interpretation often provides new insights and thus allows for knowledge-based decisions. Our expertise lies in statistical and data analysis methods as well as in the design of studies and experiments. In research and development, we focus on the following topics:
- Applied Statistics
- Machine Learning in Visual Computing
- Machine Learning and Deep Learning
- Predictive Analytics and Forecasting
In applications, we mainly use the software environment R and contribute to the enhancements of R in the form of R packages. Our experience in applied statistics is made available to all ZHAW employees and external parties with our Statistical Consulting and an annual meeting for people interested in statistics at the ZHAW.
We have extensive application experience in various areas (see under the above topic links). Together with the Institute of Applied Information Technology (InIT) we have also founded the interdisciplinary Datalab, which takes up innovative ideas in the field of data science and big data analytics and puts them into practice.
In addition to the education of Bachelor's students, we are training about 20 students of the MSc in Engineering with profile Data Science and, together with the University of Zurich, doctoral students. We are also involved with the two CAS Data Analysis and Advanced Statistical Data Analysis within the MAS Data Science as well as with the WBK R-Boot Cam in post-graduate education.
