Lifestyle Types
Who behaves just as sustainably at work as they do at home? Who gives up meat and often travels by bike? Are enthusiasm for technology and a less-is-more mentality mutually exclusive?

People differ in the way they organise their lives, in what they are interested in and in the motives that drive their behaviour - in short, they differ in their lifestyles. Nevertheless, there are certain lifestyles — combinations of behaviour and attitudes — that often occur in the population. These lifestyles offer starting points for tailor-made solutions to promote sustainable behaviour.

What is a lifestyle?
A lifestyle describes the way a person shapes their life and is therefore a mix of attitudes, interests and behaviours. If a certain combination of these elements occurs frequently, it can be summarised as a common lifestyle.
How can lifestyle research be used to promote sustainable behaviour?
Lifestyles provide information about who is willing to change their behaviour in which area and who is able to do so. The impact of behavioural change measures can thus be increased by tailoring them to the respective lifestyles.
How were the 6 lifestyle types identified?
The 6 lifestyle types are based on a survey in Switzerland. For this purpose, over 1500 people were interviewed who are representative of the Swiss population in terms of language, age and gender. The participants were asked questions about various environmentally relevant behaviours. A distinction was made between different areas (housing, mobility, nutrition) and contexts (everyday life, work, leisure). In addition, questions were asked about lifestyle preferences (e.g. cost awareness, openness to new things, health awareness) and motivations for their behaviour (see box). Information on age, gender, income, living and working environment was also collected in order to obtain a comprehensive picture of the different lifestyles.
Using statistical methods (cluster analysis), the survey participants were divided into groups of people who are similar in terms of their behaviour and underlying psychosocial characteristics. Six lifestyle types were identified.
Which lifestyle types have been identified?
The lifestyle types that occur most frequently in Switzerland are selbstbestimmte:r Sasha (28%) and nachhaltige:r Nikki (26%), closely followed by bescheidene:r Billie (23%).
The six lifestyle types represent the average of all people within the same group. This means that there are probably very few people in the population who fully correspond to a lifestyle type. You can find the publication here: Sustainability Lifestyle Typology.
