Das erste Referat der Serie hielt Dr. Zafar Khan von der Karakoram International University in Pakistan, der zurzeit als Gastforscher am IUNR zu Besuch ist. Dr. Khan sprach über das Management natürlicher Ressourcen in Pakistan und insbesondere über gemeinschaftsbasierten Biodiversitätsschutz. Er erklärte dem Publikum, dass sich «top-down» Managementregelungen wie beispielsweise Gesetze in Pakistan oftmals kontraproduktiv auf den Erhalt der Biodiversität auswirkten. Die Hauptgründe liegen in der mangelhaften Umsetzung und der Tatsache, dass die Regelungen die Anliegen der lokalen Bevölkerung nicht berücksichtigten. Die Einbindung der lokalen Bevölkerung in die Verwaltung natürlicher Ressourcen habe eine Vielzahl von positiven Effekten, wie beispielsweise ein verbessertes Management der natürlichen Ressourcen, grössere Wildtierpopulationen und sozioökonomische Verbesserungen.

Heute gibt es in Pakistan mehr als 40 gemeinschaftsbasierte Schutzgebiete und das Konzept breitet sich über die Landesgrenzen hinweg aus. Herausforderungen sieht Dr. Khan unter anderem in der Zunahme von Konflikten zwischen Menschen und Wildtieren aufgrund der grösseren Wildtierpopulationen und im Erhalt dieser Populationen ohne Anreize. Er beendete sein Referat mit einem Ausblick und nahm sich Zeit, die interessierten Fragen aus dem Publikum zu beantworten.

Teilnehmen können alle: ZHAW-Studierende und -Mitarbeitende, aber gerne auch weitere Interessierte. Die Referate beginnen um 16 Uhr, dauern jeweils eine Stunde und finden im Raum GB 217 auf dem Campus Grüental in Wädenswil statt.

This spring semester, the Master Research Unit «Biodiversity and Ecosystems» is back with a research colloquium including six talks from researchers from the IUNR and other institutions. The talks cover a wide range of topics and are open to ZHAW students, employees, and any other interested guests.

The first talk was held by Dr Zafar Khan from the Karakoram International University in Pakistan, who is currently on a visit at the IUNR as a guest scientist. Dr Khan spoke about natural resource governance in Pakistan and focused on community-based biodiversity conservation. He explained to the audience that top-down management regimes, such as federal laws, were often counter effective to the conservation of biodiversity in Pakistan due to their limited implementation and enforcement as well as the fact that they failed to take the interests of locals into account. Dr Zafar Khan pointed out that involving local communities into natural resource management had a wide range of positive effects, for example improved governance of natural resources, increased wildlife populations and socio-economic improvements.

Today, there are more than 40 community-based conservation areas in Pakistan and the approach is growing from the village level to neighbouring countries. Dr Khan also talked about challenges of the community-based conservation approach, for example human-wildlife conflicts as a result of the growing wildlife populations or sustaining wildlife populations without incentives. He closed his talk with an outlook and took the time to answer the audience’s interested questions.
