EU strikes deal on binding food waste targets

Nearly 60 million tonnes of food waste are generated per year in the EU. Lawmakers reached a provisional deal setting the first-ever EU-level targets for food waste.

In a revision of the EU waste framework directive, the Parliament and the Council have agreed to introduce binding reduction targets to be met by EU countries by the end of 2030.

Food waste at retail and consumption level would have to be cut by 30% per capita compared to 2021-2023. Meanwhile, food processors and manufacturers would be required to reduce waste by 10% over the same period.

The agreement must now be confirmed in votes by the Parliament and the Council before it can be formally adopted.
